How Do You Measure Dental Success?

Comstock Park affordable family dentist

At Stewart and Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park the dental health of our patients is our number one priority each and every day. We hope that goes without saying!

How do you measure dental success? A check-up with no cavities? A perfect smile? A crown that looks as natural as the surrounding teeth?

It could mean all those things and many more.

For a child, dental success could be defined as a check-up free of cavities, learning daily dental hygiene practices, and gaining an understanding of why it’s vital.

For a young adult woman with stains but otherwise healthy teeth, dental success may be as simple as in-office teeth whitening.

For a middle-aged man who always neglected his teeth, dental success could be defined as restorative dentistry that stabilizes his condition and improves his oral health.

Consider someone with several missing teeth who can only eat soft foods. Dental success might mean dental implants that make it possible to eat things like steak.

What are your goals for your smile? What is the current state of your oral health?

If My Gums Bleed, Should I Stop Flossing?

bleeding gums Comstock Park

If your gums bleed when you floss your teeth, should you drop flossing from your dental health routine? We’re asked about this from time to time at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park.

Our answer is short and sweet: “No!”

Bleeding is probably a sign that you need to clean your teeth and gums more thoroughly—not leave them alone. It is all but impossible to clean effectively between teeth without using floss or an interdental brush.

If you have never made flossing a habit, your gums might bleed the first few times you do it. The bleeding may be due to gum inflammation, the beginnings of gum disease. Gum disease is extremely common, and is a leading cause of tooth loss among adults. Healthy teeth and gums are essential for good dental health.

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we want all our patients to brush and floss twice a day and see us for regular checkups. We treat gum disease, and offer a wide range of family and cosmetic dentistry procedures. Please call to schedule an appointment with us today!

Hi, Comstock Park!

At Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry in Comstock Park we are committed to providing the best possible dental care for our patients. We want each one to be well-informed about their dental health and the services we provide.

We view ourselves as your first line of defense against dental issues. When you come in for your checkup, you can count on several things.

  • Teeth cleaning. One of our hygienists will clean your teeth with special tools, and make an initial inspection before the dentist comes in to do a thorough examination. The hygienist can also review your brushing and flossing, and answer any questions you may have.
  • A thorough evaluation of your teeth and gums with the doctor.
  • X-rays.  X-rays are the best way to identify any abnormalities in the teeth, gums and bone.

We may also perform any minor procedures, such as filling a cavity. It may require a follow-up appointment. Like most issues, the sooner a cavity is discovered and filled, the better.

A cleaning and checkup at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry in Comstock Park is the best way to stay on top of your dental health. People from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI trust us with their smiles. Our services include general, implant, and cosmetic dentistry, including Invisalign clear braces. Great Reasons to Floss Your Teeth

Three Great Reasons to Floss Your Teeth by Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry

Flossing your teeth is just as important as brushing them, which is why we always remind our patients to floss at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park. We’re using this short blog post to review the best reasons to floss.

  • Flossing and gum disease. Since dental floss gets into areas your toothbrush cannot reach, it is an important part of preventing gum disease. Just as filmy plaque forms on the surfaces of teeth, it gets between them, too. It hardens into tarter, and in time can result in gum disease. By removing it daily with dental floss, you go a long way toward heading off gum disease.
  • Flossing and systemic diseases. Your dental health is linked to your overall health, and flossing plays an important role. It has a positive impact on such potentially deadly diseases as diabetes, respiratory diseases, and heart disease.
  • Flossing and bad breath. This may seem like small potatoes compared to the above, but bad breath afflicts a lot of people. Brushing your teeth isn’t enough to eliminate it. Flossing will get the gunk that builds up between your teeth and contributes to bad breath.

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we recommend flossing your teeth at least once every day, and brushing at least twice. Flossing before bedtime is best. Patients from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI come to our practice to maintain good dental health with general and restorative dentistry, and to improve their smiles with cosmetic dentistry. Dental X-rays Help Us Provide Quality Care

Comstock Park orthodontist

Don’t know a periapical from a bitewing? This post from Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park takes a look at the various types of dental X-rays.

PANORAMIC

These pictures help us see everything in one image: the total upper and lower jaw. These are often taken during a patient’s first visit and renewed every five years. They are useful for evaluating cysts/tumors, jaw injuries, calcification in the carotid artery and seeing emerging teeth in children.

BITEWING

Bitewing X-rays help us see what’s going on between teeth—something that is always required but impossible with a visual exam. They also help us evaluate the jaw bone.

PERIAPICAL

These are similar to bite wings but they can get a more detailed picture of the tooth roots and bone. These are generally used to help diagnose an abscess in the root of a tooth.

FULL-MOUTH SERIES

This is a combination of periapical and bitewing X-rays. It gives a highly detailed picture of all the teeth and the surrounding bone structure.

Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park. Patients from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford MI come to our office for familycosmeticand restorative dentistry, and much more. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!

Help! My Crown Came Off!

repair broken dental crown Comstock Park

You are chewing an apple and hear an odd sound, then something in your mouth feels wrong. One of your crowns has come loose. Don’t panic! Chances are the crown can be re-cemented at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park.

What do you do when your dental crown comes off? It’s critical that you take the following steps:

Don’t Swallow It!
This sounds obvious enough, but we mention it because it can (and does) happen. Carefully take it out of your mouth.

Look Carefully
Inspect the crown and your tooth. If there is damage to either, we will need that information. Which brings us to number 3:

Clean Gently
Use a toothbrush to carefully clean the crown and the exposed partial tooth.

Handle With Care
While waiting for the crown to be re-cemented, skip substances that are chewy, sticky, or crunchy.

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we see patients from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI for family, cosmetic dentistry and a complete range of other services. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!
