A Noteworthy Dental Experience

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry in Comstock Park, we make each appointment a noteworthy experience with our attention to detail, and committment to each patient’s dental health.

Good dental health means having healthy teeth and gums. Maintaining it is something that you have to work at every day. It can be a real balancing act: using the right oral care products, your personal oral care habits, and regular checkups.

Your dental health strategy should include:

  • Daily brushing and flossing. You should brush and floss twice a day. Just before bedtime is especially important, because it cleans out the germs and plaque that build up during the course of the day.
  • Proper brushing. It’s important not only to brush, but to brush properly. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush in a gentle, circular motion along the gum line. Take your time; a minimum of two minutes is recommended. Don’t forget to brush your tongue!
  • Using fluoridated toothpaste. There is a myriad of choices when it comes to toothpaste. Whether you prefer mint flavored or bubble gum, fluoride is the most important consideration. It is your best defense against cavities.
  • Limiting sugary and acidic foods. Acidic fruits, teas, and coffee contributes to enamel erosion. Sugar converts into acid when it’s in your mouth. You don’t have to avoid these foods entirely, but choose carefully and minimize.
  • Seeing us twice a year. You saw this one coming, right? Your daily dental health care habits are essential, but so is the attention and care of a dentist. A professional teeth cleaning alone is worth the trip, but we can also identify issues before they become serious, and treat them.

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry in Comstock Park we want every checkup to be a noteworthy experience, and for all our patients to enjoy excellent dental health. People from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI come to us for family dentistry, clear braces from Invisalign, and much more. Schedule your next checkup today!

Into The Thick Of It, The Skinny On Toothpaste

Kentwood cosmetic dental and tooth implants

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we urge all of our patients to brush and floss their teeth at least twice a day. This very good habit is the single most important thing you can do to maintain your dental health.

What kind of toothpaste should you use? There is no one-size-fits-all product on the market.  There’s a huge selection of toothpastes in any grocery store. You want to make the best choice for your teeth, but it isn’t always easy to make up your mind.

Different types of toothpastes have specific active ingredients that make them work. Fluoride is by far the most important thing to look for. But there are many other ingredients; what follows is a rundown of the more common ones.

  • Detergents. Sodium lauryl sulfate is nearly ubiquitous, not only in toothpaste, but in other personal care products like shampoo. Sometimes it’s called Sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl ether sulfate. It’s the stuff that makes products foamy. Some people are sensitive to it, and some consumer advocacy groups say it can be hazardous. There are toothpastes that don’t have it.
  • Whiteners. The most common toothpaste whitener is hydrogen peroxide, but there are others, like polyphosphates. While they do a modest job whitening teeth, many experts agree that the whitening agents aren’t strong enough, or in contact with the teeth long enough, to do a really good job and can be abrasive. To get really white teeth, try professional whitening from Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry.
  • Desensitizers. Some people’s teeth are more sensitive to hot and cold foods than others. And some are more tactile-sensitive. Used on a regular basis, desensitizing toothpastes can be very effective, but it’s a good idea to get a dentist’s recommendation first.
  • Plaque fighters. A toothpaste ingredient called triclosan is believed to fight plaque and gum inflammation. While it seemed promising at first, more recent studies indicate triclosan may contribute to antibiotic resistance, disrupt hormones and the immune system and can be abrasive.

Always read the label, and make sure the toothpaste you’re considering has the American Dental Association seal. If you see it, it means the ADA considers it safe and effective. Whatever you choose, brush and floss twice each day!

Feel free to ask us for a recommendation, and what might be best for your particular set of teeth. At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we offer complete general and family dentistry. Patients from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford MI also come to us for Invisalign clear braces and dental implants. Schedule an appointment today!

Do Kids Get Periodontal Disease?

kids gum disease treatment Comstock Park

Most parents are concerned about cavities, and rightly so. Tooth decay in children is serious and widespread. But as we remind parents at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park, kids are at risk for all the same oral ailments as grownups.

That includes gum disease. Let’s discuss it.

Gum disease is caused by plaque buildup. Food particles mixed with saliva generate a sticky film called plaque. Plaque produces bacteria. If not removed by brushing and flossing, the bacteria multiply and plaque builds up on the teeth.

The gums respond by becoming sore and inflamed. Plaque buildup hardens into calculus. Calculus cannot be removed by a toothbrush or dental floss. Calculus can be removed during a professional dental cleaning.

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we treat every member of your household with our complete family dentistry. People from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI see us for cosmeticrestorative, implant and Invisalign orthodontics. Call for an appointment today!

Flossing For Health And Happiness

cost of dental crowns Grand Rapids

Most people know that flossing is an important part of oral health. As we like to remind our patients at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General in Comstock Park, the value of this  exercise in oral hygiene has been shown time and time again.

Flossing is your chance to remove the food debris that a toothbrush can’t reach.

WHICH KIND IS BEST?

When it comes to what dental floss to use, there is a lot to choose from. Flavored or unflavored? Waxed or unwaxed? Wide or thin?

No single type of floss is right for everyone. You might even benefit from having more than one kind in your medicine chest. With a little trial and error, you can narrow down your choices to find what works best for you.

A recent study shows there really isn’t much difference in the effectiveness of the different types of dental floss. Here are some things to consider:

  • Waxed floss fits more easily into tight spaces
  • Unwaxed floss tends to squeak against clean teeth, an indicator that plaque is gone
  • Wider dental tape may work better in gaps between teeth, and on bridgework

One word of caution: we recommend traditional string floss that you can pull out in a long strand, as opposed to a flossing pick. Those little picks are handy, but not as effective as string floss. They’re okay when you’re on the go, but be sure to use regular floss as part of your dental hygiene routine before bedtime. Whatever your preference may be, the important thing is to floss at least once each day.

Dental X-rays Help Us Provide Quality Care

Comstock Park orthodontist

Don’t know a periapical from a bitewing? This post from Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park takes a look at the various types of dental X-rays.

PANORAMIC

These pictures help us see everything in one image: the total upper and lower jaw. These are often taken during a patient’s first visit and renewed every five years. They are useful for evaluating cysts/tumors, jaw injuries, calcification in the carotid artery and seeing emerging teeth in children.

BITEWING

Bitewing X-rays help us see what’s going on between teeth—something that is always required but impossible with a visual exam. They also help us evaluate the jaw bone.

PERIAPICAL

These are similar to bite wings but they can get a more detailed picture of the tooth roots and bone. These are generally used to help diagnose an abscess in the root of a tooth.

FULL-MOUTH SERIES

This is a combination of periapical and bitewing X-rays. It gives a highly detailed picture of all the teeth and the surrounding bone structure.

Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park. Patients from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford MI come to our office for familycosmeticand restorative dentistry, and much more. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!

Help! My Crown Came Off!

repair broken dental crown Comstock Park

You are chewing an apple and hear an odd sound, then something in your mouth feels wrong. One of your crowns has come loose. Don’t panic! Chances are the crown can be re-cemented at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park.

What do you do when your dental crown comes off? It’s critical that you take the following steps:

Don’t Swallow It!
This sounds obvious enough, but we mention it because it can (and does) happen. Carefully take it out of your mouth.

Look Carefully
Inspect the crown and your tooth. If there is damage to either, we will need that information. Which brings us to number 3:

Clean Gently
Use a toothbrush to carefully clean the crown and the exposed partial tooth.

Handle With Care
While waiting for the crown to be re-cemented, skip substances that are chewy, sticky, or crunchy.

Toothbrush Tantrums: When Your Child Won’t Brush

how to make your child brush their teeth Comstock Park

Children’s dental experts generally recommend that parents brush their kids’ teeth until they’re around seven years old. That’s about the time most kids begin to assert their independence, so it’s a good time for them to take over. But sometimes kids get stubborn about brushing. Then what? Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park has some tips.

Ideally, children should brush their teeth twice a day. Setting the right example can make a big difference. Let your kids know how important good dental health is to you, and make sure they see you brush and floss without fail.

Here are some other tips that are tried and true:

  • Make it fun. Try singing some of your children’s favorite songs as they brush, or even do a silly dance. Make it special, something reserved for brushing.
  • Choices. Like we said, issues can arise as children begin to assert their independence. Get them more involved by letting them choose the toothbrush and toothpaste they want to use. Make sure their choice has the American Dental Association label on it – and let them know why that label important.
  • Be positive. This is one of the most important things. If your child digs in her heels and won’t brush, don’t issue any ultimatums. It’s okay to let brushing go now and then. It’s a good time to emphasize how important good dental health is. A small reward, like staying up a little later on Friday night or control of the TV remote, can help.

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we want to help our young patients start on a lifetime of good dental health. People come to us from Rockford, Walker, and Kentwood for cosmetic, family and restorative dentistry. Call us to schedule your child’s next appointment today!

When Brushing Is A Battle: Tips For Comstock Park Parents

kids dentist Comstock Park

Good dental hygiene should start early in life. When kids are really small, it’s up to parents to make sure their teeth are brushed at least once a day. As they get older and assert their independence, daily brushing can be more difficult. At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park, we have some suggestions that we hope will help.

Four Tips

  • Set The Right Example. One of the most important things to do is set the right example. This applies to so much parenting! Make sure you child sees you brushing and flossing, and understands that you consider it essential to good health.
  • Don’t Worry About Toothpaste. Some kids hate the way toothpaste tastes. When their small, don’t make too much of it. If toothpaste keeps them from brushing, then skip it. Early on, most important thing is to establish the good habit of regular brushing.
  • Be Positive. When a youngster refuses to brush, it can be incredibly frustrating. Believe us, we know! Don’t let it get to you. Don’t tell them of the consequences of not brushing: “Your teeth will all fall out!” Instead, use positive reinforcement when they do brush: an extra ten minutes playing video games before bathtime, for example.
  • Keep It Short. Don’t insist that your youngster does as thorough a job on his or her teeth as you do on yours. This is especially true when they’re just taking over their brushing duties. As with forgoing toothpaste, the critical thing is to get them in the habit of regular brushing.

Above all, be patient and don’t give up! If you keep it positive and keep at it, your child will get the message before long. At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we offer familyrestorative, cosmetic dentistry, and much more. Schedule your child’s next checkup today!

The Future Of Tooth Decay In Comstock Park

The Future Of Tooth Decay In Comstock Park

Tooth decay is the single most common dental issue there is. Unlike a cut on your finger, a cavity will not heal itself. In a worst case scenario, an untreated cavity can lead to future problems, up to and including tooth loss. That’s why we stress regular brushing and flossing to all of our patients, at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park!

Cavities form when acids in the mouth attack the enamel and dentin of the teeth. The acid is produced by bacteria in plaque, that sticky film that forms on the surfaces of teeth. When sugar is introduced it interacts with the bacteria in the plaque, and makes the acids, which attack the teeth and cause cavities.

That’s why it is so important to choose food and drink wisely. But it isn’t easy, is it? Sugar seems to be in just about everything. Health experts say the average person in the United States consumes about 19.5 teaspoons of sugar every single day! That’s twice as much as is recommended by the American Heart Association.

Knowing how much sugar is in the food that you buy is vital: not just to your teeth, but to your overall health. Reading ingredient labels on processed foods is essential.

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. So cut back on sugar, brush and floss your teeth, and see us for a cleaning and checkup every six months. Our services include family and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today.
