5 Ways To Prevent A Cracked Tooth

A cracked tooth can be painful, unattractive, and costly to repair. Today’s post in the Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry dental blog contains an easy-to-follow list of tips to keep your teeth whole and strong.

1. Don’t chew on hard things. You should steer clear of ice, hard candies, hard nuts, and beef jerky. Also, be wary of pitted fruits—that peach may be soft but if you bite hard into the pit, you could damage a tooth.

2. It is vital to protect your teeth while engaging in any physical activity where your mouth can be hit. If you enjoy pick-up basketball games, indoor soccer leagues, flag football, and many other activities, you should be using a well-fitting mouth guard.

3. Don’t use your teeth as a tool. Take a minute to find a pair of scissors before you tear open a package of lunch meat or rip the price tag off a new piece of clothing with your teeth. Use a nutcracker for nuts. A quality dental crown can cost hundreds of dollars.

4. Most people know that grinding your teeth is harmful, but did you know that it can lead to a cracked tooth? If you know or suspect that you are a tooth grinder, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull to see if you would benefit from a bite splint. The American Dental Association: Promoting Dental Health Since 1859

Hello, thank you for visiting the Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry blog today. Our practice has been providing exceptional dental care to the Grand Rapids and Comstock area since 1974. Today’s message is about the American Dental Association. You have probably seen the ADA logo on tubes of toothpaste and containers for floss, but what exactly does that mean and how does it affect you?

What is the American Dental Association?

The ADA’s objective is to improve the level of public dental health by supporting the dental industry through not-for-profit federal, state, and local associations. It was formed in 1859 and is currently run by its members, which at present total over 160,000 dental professionals.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance is not an endorsement of a product per se, but rather is a confirmation of the assertions made by a product. Companies who want the ADA certification and seal for a product must submit proof of rigorous scientific testing. Once submitted, the ADA re-tests the product to further verify the results that were submitted. There are currently over 300 products on the market in the United States with the ADA seal on them.

The ADA does more than analyze dental products. Here are some other ways the ADA works to accomplish its mission:

Educates the public about dental health
Works to maximize access to dental care

Oral Cancer Screening: Essential Exams in Comstock Park

Oral cancer screenings consist of a physical and visual exam of a patient’s mouth and surrounding tissues. When it comes to oral cancer survival rates, two numbers are key: 40% and 90%. 40% of those who receive a late-stage diagnosis die within five years. However, the survival rate for early stage diagnosis is 90%.

Oral Cavity and Oropharynx—Mouth and Throat

Eat Like A Dentist: Dental Health in Comstock Park

1. Rinse after eating

Rinse your mouth with a swish of water after meals. Better yet, brush and floss your teeth. People who snack all day long subject their teeth to sugars and food debris. Planned meals with brushing and flossing in between keeps your oral health on top.

2. Avoid sugary gum

Sugar free gum doesn’t leave sugar to break down on your teeth and jeopardize your hard earned healthy gums. If you are gum chewer, do your smile a favor and go sugarless.

3. Avoid sticky foods

Sticky foods have a way of clinging to your teeth, which puts you at risk of decay. Toffee, gummy candy, fruit snacks, even excessive dried fruit can be ill-advised for smiles. Brushing doesn’t always eliminate the obstinate particles, so remember to floss after eating sticky items.

4. Consume nutritious foods

A balanced diet with a variety of vitamins and minerals can keep the immune system durable and able to combat infection.

5. Say ‘cheese!’

Cheese contains calcium and protects teeth from acid that weakens tooth enamel. If you’re lactose intolerant, consider calcium-rich alternatives like seeds (poppy and sesame, for example) and almonds. Floss afterward!

6. Avoid acidic foods

Acid will eat away at enamel over time: lemons, red wine, soda pop. Limit direct, constant, consistent exposure. All things in moderation.
